In 2016, we won the award to design another Lab building for the army, next to one of our already built Labs on the same campus in Pune. The earlier building (NFM) was originally designed as a spread out lab, and later was converted into a 3 storey compact structure. The new FTC Lab design was partly reminiscent of the earlier, unbuilt courtyard design of the NFM building, except it was now an internal, covered courtyard with a central scissor staircase as the main element inside the building. The Plan was more an attempt to create a hidden order and a heirarchy, without making it explicit in the building. By breaking the symmetry of the plan in subtle ways, we were able to create a much more interesting organisational pattern in the design than would be normally possible.
